Northern Virginia is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor, Washington, D.C. However, this region is rich with history, culture, and natural beauty that deserves to be explored. From streets filled with history and culture to stunning parks, Northern Virginia is home to a variety of gems waiting for you. In this blog post, we will take you on a journey through some of our favorite spots in the area, showcasing what makes Northern Virginia truly special. Exploring Historic Towns


Cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and a vibrant arts scene, Old Town Alexandria has it all. Take a stroll down King Street and explore the delicious local restaurants or shop at one of the fun local shops! Then relax at the waterfront park or participate in one of the many fun events hosted in the area throughout the year.



Another gem is Leesburg, a town that combines history with modern charm. The historic district features beautifully preserved buildings and a variety of shops and eateries including the historic courthouse which offers insights into Leesburg's history and offers beautiful gardens.



Nature and Outdoor Activities


Great Falls Park is a must visit for the Northern Virginia area. Beautiful waterfalls, walking trails for all levels, picnic areas and more. Relax, and take in the insta-worthy views.



Located in Vienna, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens is a peaceful oasis filled with beautiful plants and flowers. They offer seasonal displays and walking trails throughout the park.



Unique Educational Experiences


Part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Udvar-Hazy Center is a fascinating destination for aviation enthusiasts.


  • Exhibits:

- Space Shuttle Discovery: This iconic shuttle is on display, offering a glimpse into space exploration.

- Enola Gay: The aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb during World War II is also housed here, providing a historical perspective.


The official museum of the US Army. It It breaks down the impact of the US Army over various periods of time in US history. Free Admission and Parking.


  • Exhibits:

    - Soliders' Stories - Freestanding Pylons standing in formation, where each contains an etched image of a real soldier and details on their lives.

    - Medal of Honor Experience - Stories and history of the medal of honor and it's recipients.


While technically in D.C., the National Mall is easily accessible from Northern Virginia and is a cultural treasure trove.


  • Key Sites:

- Lincoln Memorial: A powerful tribute to President Lincoln, this memorial is a must-see.

- Vietnam Veterans Memorial: This poignant site honors those who served in the Vietnam War.


Culinary Delights


Local Wineries and Breweries

Northern Virginia is a hotspot for wineries and breweries many of which offer tastings, tours and restaurant quality food. There are far more than we could include in this one post, and we will explore more later. But a few of our favorites include:

  • Paradise Springs Winery - A family run winery located in Clifton, Paradise Springs is Fairfax County's first winery. They offer tastings daily and weekend tours. Please check the website for reservation requirements.

  • The Winery at Bull Run - Located next to the Manassas National Battlefield park, they offer tastings, tours and events. They are family and pet-friendly, and have a small civil war museum on-site.

  • Eavesdrop Brewery - Once a pigeon racing loft, now a family-friendly brewery with an outdoor area that includes fire pits, games and more as well as an indoor taproom. They often have live music and events and have a couple of food options on site as well.

  • Settle Down Easy Brewing - Offering two locations in Northern Virginia: Falls Church and Oakton, they focus on specialty and seasonal craft beers. Both locations offer food and focus on creating a relaxed social atmosphere.

  • 2 Silos - Part of a large campus that includes the brewery, a music venue, restaurants, the newly opened Malarkey Distillery. They offer a variety of food options and a ton of things to do.



Farmers Markets

Visiting a local farmers market is a great way to experience the community, gran some fresh produce, support local farms, entrepreneurs and artisans.

Family-Friendly Activities

One of NoVA's most popular parks with a fully accessible playground, themed play areas, a train and carousel.


Beautiful park with walking trails, playgrounds, kids train, carousel, frisbee golf, and and ice cream parlor, mini-golf and an 18-hole par 3 golf course and driving range.


A working demonstration farm, historical meetinghouse and schoolhouse, equestrian center, and playground.
